The Mombasa Road!

Well, a lot was to be expected of this highly dangerous and unpredictable road. It’s reputation of dodgy Tarmac and speeding HGVs coming at you were not witnessed in the slightest!
Once we driven out of Nairobi, the road was occupied by a fair few trucks weaving in and out of their slower truck friends. We did come to a complete stop at one point, but it quickly came to us that by driving on the side of the road we would bypass whatever was in our way. As it turned out, there was a nasty crash involving 3 or 4 big trucks, where one of the cabs had completely come away and was wedged in-between the others all smashed up!
After that minor glitch we were off, no traffic, no problems and as ky said ” a brilliant road to drive on”
However, being only half an hour away from Kilifi, our luck dramatically changed. The sat nav had taken us off the main road about 20 or 30 km before Mombasa. The road we ended up on seemed good for a bit until it turned to mud, with no Tarmac at all. Then the heavens opened and it pissed it down! Turning driving a 3 tonne armoured vehicle difficult. The only thing to do, turn back and drive into Mombasa.
10 km away from Mombasa we hit heavy HEAVY traffic, HGVs all lined up waiting and no movement at all. Fuck it we’ll drive on the other side of the road then! So off we went, the other side of the road with many other people that had the same idea. After getting so far driving the wrong side with HGVs, cars, bikes and whatever else coming at us, we managed to cut back in. And again, no movement! Fuck it, we’ll do it again. So off the road and straight down the side and cutting in when we had to. A few comedy moments arrived while driving into Mombasa, such as people getting stuck in big dips in the road and not being able to get out, or the motorbike that couldn’t get past us so had to drive through a puddle that was up to his waist deep.
Eventually getting through the traffic, and making a wrong turn which was a minor hiccup we got to Kilifi. Only 3 hours extra more than what was supposed to be a 7 hour drive!
I must say well done ky, great driving!

Weekend in Naivasha

Had a great first weekend in the Naivasha log cabin. Ky and I had to build our own beds on Friday night when we got there in a very small room, which included bed sheets that would probably set alight if you turned too quickly in the night. Saturday we headed to a motorbike endurance race, the laps were so big we only saw about a dozen racers going around in the blistering heat, and then Sunday back to Nairobi to rest for the monster drive to Kilifi.

And as I’m sure you all know, the evenings were consisted of more Tuskers.

First night out.

Hello all! Chris and i have had a fairly relaxed first few days, mainly involving lots of lunch and lots of Tusker. Popped over to the giraffe centre on Tues and went to the museum today, very lovely indeed! Went out for a couple of sherberts tonight in Westlands, think im feeling the affects of the altitiude consideribly more than chris, not good.

Off to the log cabin in Naivasha tomorrow and then taking the 8 hour drive to Kalifi from Nairobi, watching out for Somalian pirates on the way! Wish us luck!
